Giraffes? Horses? Squirrels?? 20 Animals You Didn’t Know Are Going Extinct

Treehugger has put together a startling gallery of animals on the list of endangered species, and many are species you wouldn’t expect to be on such a list. They are species of familiar animals that are easily recognizable. Many are animals we see at the zoo, and sadly, the zoo and animal sanctuaries are the last refuge for many of these species.

Water Buffalo - There are less than 2500 mature wild water buffalo remaining

Socorro Parakeet - going extinct in the wild due to their popularity as household pets. The wild population may be as few as 250 mature adults.

Rothschild Giraffe - Those living in the wild are found in protected areas in Kenya and Uganda, while about 450 individuals are found in zoos around the world.

Pygmy hippo - The last population estimate in 1990 put the species at 3000 individuals, and studies suggest this estimate is too high.

Przewalski’s Horse - Currently, there are about 50 mature horses living in the wild with more individuals in captive breeding programs and zoos. That’s not very many and a major threat to the species is a loss of genetic diversity and thus disease.

Grevy’s Zebra - Only 2500 individuals of this zebra species are left in the wild.

San Joaquin Antelope Ground Squirrel - Thanks to agriculture and a whole lot of rodenticide, this Californian squirrel species has less than 20% of its former range and an estimated 124,000-413,000 individuals left.

A few years ago—by accident, really—Carl Zimmer became the de facto curator of science-based body art. The author of The Loom blog over at DISCOVER as well as numerous books, Zimmer asked his readers about their tattoos, and whether any of them had inked themselves up in science-inspired motifs. The response was greater than he imagined.

Those responses, which often arrived in Zimmer’s inbox in the form of images, have now been compiled into a book published earlier this month, . In it, the science obsessed—or at least those enthusiastic enough to etch their favorite equations, diagrams, schematics, and formulas directly onto their dermises—show off their needlework in a coffee table-worthy collection of pics, arranged by Zimmer into categories centered on major scientific disciplines: math, chemistry, neuroscience, evolutionary biology, astronomy, and a dedicated chapter on DNA.

From those pages we’ve pulled a few of our favorite works—from Darwin’s finches to a Dali-like double helix to a front-to-back neural net—and collected them here. Click through the link above to see some of our favorite science-derived ink from the collection.

This has caused critical aspects of human connectedness and social life to become systemically underdeveloped, starved of energy and material resources. Tiny, Feathery Dinosaur Raises Jurassic Questions...

scinerds:

Tiny, Feathery Dinosaur Raises Jurassic Questions Like ‘Can I Clone It and Keep It?’

Known by many paleontologists as cutie-pieous rex.. No but seriously:

When paleontologists began discovering feathery dinosaurs during the 1990s, every find was a tantalizing glimpse at possibilities that researchers had based on bone. Now, almost seventeen years since the Sinosauropteryx splash, fluffy dinosaurs seem almost mundane. Finding yet another small, bird-like, fuzzy dinosaur doesn’t spur the same excitement that earlier discoveries did. This is not to say that these new finds are not important. Quite the contrary. With every new feathered dinosaur named, paleontologists uncover a little more context for ongoing discussions about the evolution of flight, feathers, and birds. The latest fluffy dinosaur to join the ranks – Eosinopteryx brevipenna.

Found by a commercial collector in the roughly 161 million year old stone of northeastern China’s Tiaojishan Formation, the tiny dinosaur is preserved as a virtually complete skeleton. Encircled by feather fossils, the 30 cm long dinosaur lies with its arms held out and legs bent. The theropod almost looks like it’s ready to take off running, except for the fact that the dinosaur’s head is slightly detached from the vertebral column.

Described by Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences paleontologist Pascal Godefroit and coauthors in Nature Communications, Eosinopteryx is the third fluffy dinosaur known from the same deposits. The skeletally-similar Anchiornis and Xiaotingia have both been found in Tiaojishan Formation and supposedly lived around the same time. (How old these dinosaurs are, and whether they were contemporaries, is a tricky question made all the more complicated by the fact that these specimens are often purchased from commercial dealers who do not rigorously record geological information about the fossils.) Could Eosinopteryx be an Anchiornis by another name? Godefroit and colleagues argue against synonymy, citing plumage as the key difference.

Compared to Anchiornis and other closely-related feathered dinosaurs within a group called deinonychosaurs, Eosinopteryx seemed to be missing feathers. Whereas Anchiornis had long pennaceous feathers along the tail, ankles, and feet, Eosinopteryx lacked these specialized features. Rather than being a quirk of preservation, Godefroit and coauthors argue, Eosinopteryx seems to lack these feathers because they weren’t actually there. The fact that delicate, plume-like feathers were preserved on the dinosaur’s tail, for example, hints that the dinosaur’s anatomy is preserved to such a high degree that pennaceous feathers would have turned up had they been present.

The researchers also doubt that the difference in feather types was the result of changes during growth. Based upon the degree of fusion between certain bones in the skeleton, Godefroit and collaborators hypothesize that the lone Eosinopteryx specimen was a subadult or adult when it perished. The paleontologists concede that this Eosinopteryx specimen might have lacked pennaceous tail and leg feathers because it was moulting when it perished, but, based on other features, they argue that the fossil faithfully preserves the dinosaur’s true plumage. The fact that Eosinopteryx had comparatively short arms and uncurved toe claws is consistent with a life spent scurrying over the ground rather than flapping through the air.

Of course, the plumage, relationships, and behavior of Eosinopteryx are all hypotheses that are open to testing. Paleontologists aren’t totally agreed on the usefulness of bone fusion alone to estimate the ages of dinosaurs, and claw shape isn’t necessarily a good indicator of preferred habitat or natural history. The most controversial aspect of the new study may not be the behavior or age of Eosinopteryx, though, but the feathered dinosaur family tree the researchers recovered.

The evolutionary tree, created by comparing subtle traits of various dinosaurs and early birds with each other to discern relationships, found that the famous Archaeopteryx wasn’t actually an early bird, but an archaic deinonychosaur – the larger group that contains troodontids like Anchiornis and dromaeosaurids such as Velociraptor. This placement echoes the results of a controversial study, published in Nature in 2011, which proposed that Archaeopteryx, Anchiornis, and Xiaotingia formed a distinct subgroup of feathered dinosaurs that was further removed from bird ancestry than traditionally thought.

Does this mean that we should stop calling Archaeopteryx the earliest known bird? Not necessarily. “[T]his phylogeny remains only weakly supported,” Godefroit and coauthors caution, and the paleontologists point out that convergent evolution among small, feathered dinosaurs might obscure the true pattern of relationships between the feathered forms. The identity of Archaeopteryx is being questioned, and rightly so, but paleontologists have yet to fully resolve which particular lineage of dinosaur spawned the first birds.

Birds are a special lineage of coelurosaurian dinosaurs. That is a fact. But the details of when and how that transition occurred, not to mention exactly from whom, are still areas of active debate. Eosinopteryx underscores the increasingly complex pattern of feathered dinosaur evolution and bird origins. The tiny dinosaur is another point of reference in an ongoing discussion about when dinosaurs took to the air, and which particular lineage left avian heirs to the Mesozoic legacy.

[The restoration of Eosinopteryx above was created by Emily Willoughby. Check out her artwork here.]

Seems it weren’t too hard to find. Thank you brain.

I like tattoos that don’t compete with other tattoos. When one piece holds itself up. This either requires a very lonely tattoo or a very stylistically similar set of tattoos (some sleeves). Ben Henderson, light weight fighter in the UFC, has had his entire back covered by a pair of wings. This guarantees that there won’t be any style breaking additions since there is physically no room left for more art on his back.

I have a thing for stripes. Also that text thing on the ribs is of some style I like but can’t name.

I was going to post the entire set (as I’ve collected it) but most of the pictures where just the model being naked and showing her tattoos (in that order). This picture is the closest thing to showing the tattoos before being naked. You’ll just have to click through to Damien’s site and look for more pictures yourself.

As always, people steal on tumblr and I have to go hunting for the source of great pictures. I think this picture really is less of a “tattoo picture” and more of a “beauty picture”. There’s something doll like to the model and I wasn’t really surprised when I found more picture with equal quality outside tumblr.

I even went as far as to ask for the photographer’s name and it seems that this is a self portrait. Stunning!

Is that a mobile phone with an antenna in the background…?

I’m not quite sure why it was obvious to me. Maybe it was the fact that the curves of Batgirl are honest and not physically impossible. Maybe it was because I felt the artist has put time into the boots and cape. I know part of it is because of the posture of Cassandra Cain is confident without the need to be (sexually) daring.

And that face. That face tells me a story that no male comic artist (mind you, I’m by no means an expert) has ever been able to tell me through a facial expression.

steegeschnoeber:

oneandonlygabriel:

I really, REALLY wish you could read this article about a father who started wearing skirts because his son likes to wear skirts and dresses and he wants his son to feel stronger
Like, holy shit, the end made me feel so happy

I took the liberty to translate the text.

Please note that it’s not a word to word translation.

Sometimes men simply have to be role models.

Because his son likes to wear skirts Nils Pickert started with it as well. After all, the little one needs a role model. And he thinks long skirts with elastic bands suit him quite well anyways. A story about two misfits in the Province of southern Germany.

My fife year old son likes to wear dresses. In Berlin Kreuzberg that alone would be enough to get into conversation with other parents. Is it wise or ridiculous? „Neither one nor the other!“ I still want to shout back at them. But sadly they can’t hear me any more. Because by now I live in a small town in South Germany. Not even a hundred thousand inhabitants, very traditional, very religious. Plainly motherland. Here the partiality of my son are not only a subject for parents, they are a town wide issue. And I did my bit for that to happen.

Yes, I’m one of those dads, that try to raise their children equal. I’m not one of those academic daddies that ramble about gender equality during their studies and then, as soon as a child’s in the house, still relapse into those fluffy gender roles: He’s finding fulfilment in his carrier and she’s doing the rest.

Thus I am, I know that by now, part of the minority that makes a fool of themselves from time to time. Out of conviction.

In my case that’s because I didn’t want to talk my son into not wearing dresses and skirts. He didn’t make friends in doing that in Berlin already and after a lot of contemplation I had only one option left: To broaden my shoulders for my little buddy and dress in a skirt myself. After all you can’t expect a child at pre-school age to have the same ability to assert themselves as an adult. Completely without role model. And so I became that role model.

We already had skirt and dress days back then during mild Kreuzbergian weather. And I think long skirts with elastic bands suit me quite well anyways. Dresses are a bit more difficult. There was either no reaction of the people in Berlin or it was positive. In my small town in the south of Germany that’s a little bit different.

Being all stressed out, because of the moving I forgot to notify the nursery-school teachers to have an eye on my boy not being laughed at because of his fondness of dresses and skirts. Shortly after moving he didn’t dare to go to nursery-school wearing a skirt or a dress any more. And looking at me with big eyes he asked: “Daddy, when are you going to wear a skirt again?”

To this very day I’m thankful for that women, that stared at us on the street until she ran face first into a street light. My son was roaring with laugher. And the next day he fished out a dress from the depth of his wardrobe. At first only for the weekend. Later also for nursery-school.

And what’s the little guy doing by now? He’s painting his fingernails. He thinks it looks pretty on my nails, too. He’s simply smiling, when other boys ( and it’s nearly always boys) want to make fun of him and says: “You only don’t dare to wear skirts and dresses because your dads don’t dare to either.” That’s how broad his own shoulders have become by now. And all thanks to daddy in a skirt.

I hope it’s alright like this.
